The Red Hook Coastal Resiliency project* is a coastal protection project funded by the City of New York, and Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) and the New York State Department of Emergency and Homeland Security Services (DSHES), aimed at reducing flood risks due to coastal storm surge and sea level rise along Red Hook's waterfront, while also integrating with the community fabric, and improving the long-term resiliency of the neighborhood.

While others march in Manhattan the youth of Red Hook will rally right here in Red Hook, on the climate frontlines, and will speak out about climate justice. We hope you will join us! Friday September 20th, NOON - 2pm.

Adam Armstrong has been leading the charge on behalf of Red Hook to fight for clean air and clean electric non-polluting technologies in our transportation systems. He will be joining the panel on Monday Sept 24th with the New York League of Conservation Voters, to push for electrifying our school bus fleets.

They’re big, they’re yellow and they’re polluting our air. School buses are the largest form of mass transit in the United States, and they desperately need an upgrade. Emissions from diesel school buses are linked to asthma, chronic respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, cancers, and even higher mortality rates. No one should have to breathe in dangerous pollutants while riding the bus, especially when cleaner, safer alternatives, such as all-electric school buses, are available.

Join us at our town hall as we head back to school and learn about the need for better busing from our diverse panel of speakers. We’re bringing together experts and local activists to discuss the impact of diesel school buses and explore pathways to going electric. 

On September 8th, after months of organizing and movement-building, the Peoples Climate Movement will bring tens of thousands of people across the country into the streets, town halls, and community forums. Joined by partners around the world, we will demand bold action on climate, jobs, and justice. Those demands will determine the future of our movement - and our world - for years to come.

The urgency of climate change has charged some coastal neighborhoods to mount their own initiatives to tackle rising seas and intensifying storms. With Red Hook as a case study, we’ll explore the potential of community organizing to prioritize environmental justice and preserve unique ecosystems, and the limits of local activism in the face of global climatic shifts requiring massive infrastructure interventions. Associate director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at SUNY Stony Brook Christine O'Connell moderates a discussion with Waterfront Alliance President and CEO Roland Lewis, Fifth Avenue Committee environmental organizer Karen Blondel, and architect, co-chair of Resilient Red Hook, Gita Nandan.

Join NYC Parks for an update on the construction and remediation at the Red Hook Recreation Area. 

CLEANUP TO START AT BALL FIELDS 5-8 The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks) will be cleaning up Red Hook Park Ball Fields 5-8 and 9, under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversight. Some of the soil on these fields is contaminated with lead from a historic secondary lead smelting facility known as the Columbia Smelting and Refining Works (Columbia) facility.
